Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Zero Hour 30th Anniversary Special
Throughout his time as the Green LanternDC Comics’ Kyle Rayner has had one of the Justice League’s most eventful – and most tragic – love lives. From his doomed romance with Alexandra DeWitt to his star-crossed romance with Soranik Natu, the Torchbearer really can’t catch a break. But the Green Lantern’s greatest love has always been a fellow Justice Leaguer, and he knows it.
Zero Hour 30th Anniversary Special by Dan Jurgens, Ron Marx, and several artists throws Kyle back to a formative point in his Lantern career as he’s trapped in a splinter universe undergoing the effects of Zero Hour. Here, the Green Lantern crosses none other than Donna Troy – this universe’s Wonder Woman.
In a segment penciled by Jerry Ordway, Kyle thinks back on their past, saying, “Donna could have been the one. And then she was just…gone. I’m still not sure I understand why.” And though it’s clear Kyle still misses Troy, fans don’t have to wonder why their relationship failed.
Green Lantern’s Love Life Is Rough
Wonder Woman’s Sister Has Her Share of Struggles
Green Lantern and Donna Troy first found one another shortly after Kyle took over the legacy of the Green Lantern Corps. Still mourning the loss of his girlfriend, Alexandra DeWitt, Rayner was in over his head in more ways than one. Meanwhile, the former Wonder Girl, Donna Troy, was navigating her new status as a single mother and divorcee, showing Kyle the ropes of the hero game as the two naturally turned to one another for comfort. Eventually, the two heroes would fall deeply in love, only for their relationship to crumble after the death of Donna’s son, ex-husband, and stepdaughter.
While the two legacy heroes haven’t found their way back to each other in the decades since, they remain a fan-favorite pairing to this day. After all, Donna’s decades of experience made her a natural mentor for the then-fledgling Green Lantern, and Kyle Rayner’s sensitive and carefree energy did Wonder Woman’s sister a lot of good during a stressful point in her life. In many ways, these Justice Leaguers helped each other to feel more humanand as such, it’s only natural that Green Lantern misses their relationship as much as the fans do.
Green Lantern And Donna Troy May Belong Together
These Former Titans Could Be The League’s Greatest Romance
Green Lantern and Donna Troy haven’t been together in decades at this point, but their whirlwind romance is one of DC Comics’ most iconic ’90s pairings. While the tragic fate of this issue’s splinter universe prevents Kyle from starting things back up with this Wonder Woman/Donna Troy, all hope isn’t lost for Kyle and Donna’s fans. Because with DC All-In reuniting the heroes of the DC Universe like never before, the chances of Kyle Rayner crossing paths with his old flame are higher than ever – allowing Green Lantern and Donna Troy to prove themselves the Justice League’s greatest romance.
